Task killer, one of the most prominent words within the android world. One that causes many arguments and confusion, well today lets see if we can put it all to rest.

I am constantly surprised when talking to new android owners that come to me with questions about their "faulty" phone and "poor-performing" battery, to discover that one of the first apps they installed was a task killer. Even more surprised when I dig deeper and ask why, with one of the top responses being because their "techy" friend said its a vital app. First things first, anything vital will be a core part of the the operating system. If google required that a task killer be a core part of their os, they would have included an easy way to kill apps, end of. Also, if your "techy" friend told you to download an task killer, please, ignore any advice from them in the future, you will regret it if you don't.

So lets get on with this, following the jump I will be doing my best to describe why a task killer is not only not necessary, but BAD for your phone and your experience with the phone. I will also discuss the very few cases where one may be appropriate, and explain best practice in those situations.

Here kicks off the App Of The Moment Series. I feel that app of the day lists sometimes simply push an app because there has to be an app every day, and that app isn't actually that good. So my solution to this dilema, say hello to App Of The Moment! Guaranteed to make you check out every app mentioned!

Let kick of with an app that adds value to a key part of the android system, task switching. One of the greatest features of android is the ability to truly multitask, not that fake or pretend multitasking that other certain mobiles phone offer.. So I present to you Visual Task Switcher!

Google listen is a great free podcast application for android. Made by Google themselves, which pretty much guarantees it being a well made app. It is available for free on the android market for most people, but for a reason unknown to all (except maybe google), some countries cannot see or download the app. Well, that is until now!

First in the series of quick guides. Straight to the point guides about how to do something specific.

We will kick off this set of guides with how to quickly highlight some text inside of a text box. Really, really simple this one. Just double tap inside of an editable text box then drag right or left to highlight as many characters as you drag your finger over. Very good if you want to remove or copy a certain bit of text. Follow the jump to see a video detailing this quick android tip!

More pics have emerged from what looks likely to be the first android tablet to be released from a major manufacturer, Samsung. The new pictures confirm a few details for us, most notably that the device is running froyo, and also confirming the look of the browser and keyboard.

However, please do take these images with a pinch of salt. There are many things that could be fake, for instance the connector looks a little too much like an apple connector. The bottom hard buttons look like stickers, and in the larger picture you cannot see these buttons at all. It wouldn't be the first time a chinese website did something like this!

This guide will let you root a HTC Desire running a bootloader version of 0.83 or below with an AMOLED OR SLCD SCREEN. Here at Droid Den we already have a guide, but that is only for Desires that have a bootloader version of 0.75 or below. Therefore this guide is to complement the other guide! So what advantages does rooting bring?

  • Store apps on your sdcard instead of phone memory. So no more running out of space to install apps!
  • Get rid of those stupid demo apps your provider adds to your phone.
  • Turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot. Other devices can connect via wireless and share your phones internet
  • Take screenshots of your phone from your phone.
  • Better memory management, your phone will never slow down!
  • Overclock your phone, more speed! (If possible!)
  • Full backup ability. Backup your whole phone state. Restoring this backup puts your phone in the exact same condition as the backup.
  • Use Market Enabler to access paid apps if currently unavailable in your country.

Follow the jump for the guide!
